💧 Water — Non-Negotiable

  • Minimum 2 liters per person per day
  • More in summer — do not skimp
  • Do not drink from Pine Creek or natural sources without treatment
  • Bring extra for pets on pet-friendly trails

🦮 Pets in Zion

Zion National Park does not allow pets on most trails. Service animals are the only exception inside the park. Several locations in this guide are outside park boundaries and are pet friendly — check each listing.

🚌 The Shuttle System

  • During peak season, the main canyon road requires the shuttle
  • Get to shuttle stops early — lines grow fast
  • Some locations in this guide bypass the shuttle entirely
  • Off-season you can drive directly into the canyon

🌡️ Weather & Seasons

  • Summer: Extreme heat — start early, carry double water
  • Fall: Best season — mild temps, golden colors
  • Winter: Some roads/trails close; slick rock conditions
  • Spring: Wildflowers but flash flood risk in slot canyons

⚠️ Flash Flood Safety

Flash floods can occur with no warning in slot canyons and river beds — even if it's sunny where you are. Check weather for the entire watershed before entering any canyon. If you hear a roar or see rising water, move to high ground immediately.

📡 Cell Service Warning

Most locations in this guide have limited to zero cell service. This app works fully offline. For remote locations — especially Toroweap and Fossil Canyon — bring a satellite communication device and tell someone your plan and expected return time.

🏕️ Leave No Trace

  • Pack out everything you pack in
  • Stay on designated trails where marked
  • Do not touch petroglyphs — oils damage them permanently
  • Keep knowledge of hidden trails discreet
  • Clean up after your pets

🎒 Essential Gear Checklist

  • Sturdy hiking boots or shoes
  • Sunscreen and wide-brim hat
  • Moleskin for blister prevention on long hikes
  • Camera and tripod for golden hour shots
  • GPS device or satellite communicator for remote areas
  • First aid kit and extra food
  • Spare tire for dirt road destinations

🅿️ Parking Tips

  • Arrive early — lots fill by 8am in peak season
  • Tourists cycle in/out quickly at overlooks — wait a few minutes
  • Do not park outside designated spots at Observation Point
  • Motorhomes: check each listing — many roads are not suitable
